Stop on Red Week August 2–8 The National Coalition for Safer Roads’ Stop on Red Week is a good opportunity to revisit safe driving techniques and traffic signals. Many people can be tempted to speed or skip red lights if they’re running late for work or a meeting. In fact, 56% of drivers admit to skipping a red light at least part of the time. This is risky and dangerous behavior that can have devastating consequences: Motor vehicle deaths hit a spike of 24% in 2020 despite a reduction in miles driven (National Safety Council) In 2018, 846 people were killed and an estimated 139,000 were injured in crashes involving red-light running (NHTSA) About half of red-light running crash deaths involve pedestrians, cyclists and occupants in vehicles hit by the red-light runners (IIHS) No job or meeting is more important than a life. To serve more patients on a growing waitlist, “The Eye Gallery” has plans to open a new 7,400 sf building across the street from their current office at 21st Street and K-96 in northeast Wichita, Kan. Country singer Dierks Bentley’s “Whiskey Row” is an American pub designed to bring patrons a rock & roll experience inspired by Dierks himself. Currently located in three Arizona cities—as well as Nashville, Tenn.—Whiskey Row is known for its award-winning food and drinks accompanied by an exhilarating nightlife. Since 2019, Chipotle has been adding drive-thrus to select U.S. locations called “Chipotlanes,” allowing customers to order online and pick up via drive-thru. Jaco built one of the first Chipotlanes in the country and now has built a total of four and counting. During the pandemic, Chipotle’s digital sales exploded, making up more than half of sales in 2020. Now, Chipotle is investing in more online-order only Chipotlanes in new locations. Another new retailer — and brand — is coming to Greenwich Place at K-96 and Greenwich. Under Armour, the Baltimore-based international chain of casual and sports wear, is coming to a freestanding building in front of REI. Construction on the 10,000-square-foot building started Tuesday. “Under Armour is going to be at the front door of the project, which is really exciting,” said Christian Ablah of Classic Real Estate. If you drive past the new Torchy’s Tacos at 21st and Rock, notice a crowd of people stuffing their faces with tacos on the big patio, and feel left out, here’s some consolation for you: On Wednesday, the restaurant will officially open, and those who didn’t get an invite to Torchy’s soft opening, which happens Sunday and Monday, will finally get a taste of the taco restaurant they’ve watched going up on the intersection’s southwest corner for the last several months.
